Community

Community - a group of people having common interests.

At HIS we hear talk of a caring community, a professional learning community, and a family-like community. Seems that the word community is used rather frequently these days, and not just at HIS. On CNN and elsewhere we are reminded that we are truly a global community. There is much talk about the loss of community all around us as ours lives continue to fill with added pressures, stresses, deadlines and commitments. Seems if we are not careful we can easily begin to lose touch with what we regard as important.

All this brings me to wonder, what is it that we each want from our HIS community? Educators arrive here eager and passionate to make a difference and contribute to something special. Students and parents come to HIS, I imagine, looking for some unique pathway to a successful future.

So then, what are some of the "common interests" that we share as a school community? What is it that you believe in and are looking for in your life right now? How can we as educators, students or parents influence your ability to stay close to what it is you regard as important to you? Possibly, if we start to share our ideas and answer such questions, we will begin to see from our different and similar voices a unique and untapped potential that exists in our shared experience together. Please share some of your thoughts. I'd like to hear what others think about the potential within our HIS community...

It's an interesting question. How does one build a genuine community? A caring community? One of many things that HIS has going for it is it's size. No one is allowed to be invisible. I believe that a community can only be built when all members are known and understood. In large schools it's easier to be mean to to bully somebody that you don't know then somebody that you know. As we grow, our sense of community will continue to be challenged. However, this just means we have to get even better and doing the things we are already doing.

I think there must be a leader who is doing it first in order to have more people doing it..Then, if there are many people doing it, seems like the whole community is doing it, which is what you are hoping for?

I Think If A Small Group Decides To Do Good Things That Makes HIS A Good Community, Then I Think All People In HIS Will Start Doing The Same For This Community To Make It The Community That Welcome Everyone. And I agree With Gene......XD

First we have to let everyone know how important is it to build a better community. Because the reason people aren't cooperating is because they don't think it's a important thing, that's because most of the people think for their own good. So to be able to let everyone know how important it is to build a better community in HIS is to make a survey, and reply each student's survey after the teachers know how they think about to build a better community.

I think at our size, we were able to bond very easily with everyone. It is absolutely incredible to know every single member of this community. However I think we should focus more on what we actually achieve as a community.

I have kind of similar idea with Ray, but from what my point is: If there are people going good things and all people will do it to, but how about the bad side? There are bad people gather too. Cause we have each little community in our school, but not every one like it. I like Gene's point. Which is what you are hopping for? This is from my point of looking their point. ( maybe I don't just don't get it =''=)

Interesting... ya I agree which the sense of " community" is losing due to mistrust and fear among people. I think that for HIS to be a true community, we must break these mistrust and fear, and learning to trust, and encourage one another, so we can have a sense that we are a big family where everyone is cared and " have each other's back"

Nice post Mr Willis.

I think we are a very loving community, mostly because we took advantage of the size of it, so then we have a better advantage at taking care and knowing everyone within the community. I would not say that we are a good community though, cause a community is created with care and love for each other, so based on the fact that the community is based on caring then all community would be labeled good. which is not the case because within good theres always bad.

I agree with Connie. The school is good as it is now. The size is great, because there aren't too many students, so it's still possible for everyone to know everyone.

and regarding to my previous comment, what i mean by " having people's back" is that we are willingly to support one another, and when some one did something wrong, we give help them, and when your peers have a good idea about something, you gave support.

the idea of a school community is good and very reasonable but a community that is to small is very irritating because everybody knows everybody else's business and u cant do anything with out everyone knowing. but other than that it is a good idea

If what we're aiming for is building a genuine and caring community, then size shouldn't be one of our biggest priorities. Correct me if it should be the other way round.

I like to connect community to learning. So much learning goes on outside the classroom that it is important for us to have conversations about our ideas, what is happening in our classes and the larger world community. Being good listeners is very important to support one another as our learning expands beyond the classroom. We use the term "seek to understand" to guide us in our listening. :)
