Hey students, how did it go?
HIS students: you recently completed five weeks of community service learning around Hsinchu. So tell us what you thought of your experience...What did you do? What did you learn about yourself or others? Was it what you expected it to be? Would you recommend it to others? Share your thoughts; we really want to know! And thanks for your great efforts to get out there and make a difference.

i loved the animal shelter even if it was kinda tiring to walk to dogs....it was acually kinda sad after 4 weeks with a dog and then the 5th week it wasnt there(got killed) I really liked to see the dogs come out after begin locked up and run everywhere, d feeding them i also love the way the dog i walked gave a attitude to everything. I would liek to go back next year
it was how i expected to be, i will probably recommend it to others, because it's a useful on volunteer history on resumes.
We gone to the Jubei Learning Center....The group check homework for the little kilds and help them learn some English and prepare some of the test that they needed to take...I learned something about the kids, was that they are very active..so they are kind of hard to teach..and some of the girls are some how violent. But thats the way that are...I didn't expect it to be this because it's hard to teach when all on their mind is to PLAY! PLAY! PLAY! I don't think this may be recommended to others because it's kind of hard
i went to the elder care
For these weeks, I went to the Jubei Learning Center to check their homework, play some English games (Hang-Man, etc), or read them English stories. But I don't think the kids really like it, they just want to play after they've done their homework. So actually we ended up with playing (not English games) with them. Of course, while we are playing with them we are trying to talk to them in English and they've learned some words too! I think that's all we can do their. Some kids were so violent that they wanted to take a knife and stab us, but we were lucky, they didn't have a knife. I think it's a good thing to go and have fun with the kids. I hope we can do it next time.
Before we start going to the Shyinlu Function community service, I was very exciting about what can I do and what should I do to help the kids in Syinlu Function. I had no experience to help the kids that need help with other people, but I strong feel that I can do something for helping them. And so far, I helped the Syinlu Function to organized the invoices they have, make them easier and get faster to functioning the invoices, we had fun time just doing organized invoices, put those in different boxes the number from zero to nine and I was so surprises that there were so many invoices that we need to organized, I can’t imagine how much money I can get from those invoices. Every time after we finish the organization we went to take care and watch the kids doing. Kids that have some mental problem or physical problem were over there and have no clue that who the hell we are, so they were just like someone see a stranger and didn’t look at me, how should I help someone doesn’t even want to talk? well I think when they know much about us, they can recognized our faces, body, sound, even smell, they they would recognized us very well. The firs time I met them, I just felt that they were cute and smarter than I thought because I can feel they knew and understand what am I want them to do, but I cannot handle someone just cry all the time don’t even response me, sigh.
I want to thank Mr. Willis let me have this great experience to learned how to help the kids and I can do the great job, if there’s next time I wish I can go to there help them as well, I was have lot of fun.
the elders weren't active at all, and on the last day one of them laughed at my hair. For most of the time we throw those big gym balls at the elders sitting on wheel chairs, to prevent their muscle go bad, cause they never move.
Well, I went to the Syinlu Foundation along with the other group members. I was actually pretty nervous the first two weeks I was there, but as the third week came, I felt more comfortable around the children at the foundation.
What we did at the Syinlu foundation was we helped the kids get to different classrooms and played various games with them. I didn't really learn much about myself, but I did learn that I seemed to go "numb" and "blank" for the first time I was there. This was probably because I hadn't ever encountered such children before.
I would definitely recommend going to volunteer at this service. It was a very incredible experience, and I am considering going to do more community service there in the summer. It was great to see the light in their eyes shine. It was fabulous to know that you lightened up someone's day just by spending time talking to them, or even just simply sitting there by them.
I also learnt that you don't really need a lot to be happy. These children in the foundation had so many limitations with their moving abilities, yet they could still be so happy. I admired these children for this very fact, that they could be happy with their limitations. Teenagers, and humans in general want too much from life. They don't sit back and take a good look at what they have to appreciate.
Overall, it was an amazing experience. Loved it!
I really love the trip to the Animal Shelter. Although my dog was gone the 2nd week I went there, but it was a very unique experience, and i will like to go back there next year if i have a chance
i found it interesting to find out exactly what many people thought about community service i found that many people dont really do community service and such things it was fun talking to new people and finding out what they thought on the subject of community service

Before I went to this community service project, I was a little bit scared if I will not able to take care of the children at because I never had any similar experiences of taking care kids. Kids in Syinlu all have some kind of down syndrome, so they don’t necessarily respond to people. However, I found out that some of them are happy to see us and can even remember our faces! One of the kid I looked after even chatted with me when I go there for the second time. The kid asked me many questions. He is cute! I was glad to see the children laugh when we play or talk to them. The greatest challenge was that many kids are unable to stand properly, so we have to stand beside them all the time. Some of them are very active and like to walk around. We need to hold their hands and be careful not letting them to walk around or else they might get hurt.
I’ve always wanted to volunteer in community service works. This was a cool experience which I can get in contact with kids. Although those children are little bit different than the normal kids, they are still adorable. The teachers at Syinlu worked hard taking care of the kids and teach us and I appreciate their efforts. I would like to be a volunteer at the Syinlu Foundation during summer vacation!

Before I went, I was very excited when I heard that we get to go do community service. I've been waiting for that day since the beginning of the school year. I've always wanted to help people around the community. I signed up for the Shin Lu Down Syndrome Center; it's a place for children from 1~6 year olds that have Down syndrome. I decided to choose this because I've never have any contact with these kind of children and thought that it'll be a really good experience.
The most difficult thing for me was carrying a child. Every time I carry a child, my arms get very sore, but I don’t really mind because I really like the child. After a few times, I got use to it so my arms were not as sore.
After I went there, I find out that I like doing voluntary work even more! I really enjoyed my time there and wish we could spend longer time there. The children there were actually easier to take care of than I thought. I had a really great time take caring of the children and really got a chance to bond with them quite well. I tried my best to take care and talk to them. After I got involved a couple of times, I found out that I was very patient with them. I am usually not very patient with little children. I also know how to properly wake the children up and carry them.

Before I go and help at the Syinlu foundation, I felt nervous and excited. Because I don’t really know how to take care of little kids especially the kids are special. The part I’m nervous is about how to take care of those special kids and how I can play with them but also not hurting them.
The thing I got experience after I involved is those kids in syinlu foundation are cute and innocent. I enjoyed to play and take care with those little kids very much. The most difficult thing for me is to hug those little kids, because some of the kids are active and i also afraid will I hurt those kids when I was hugging them. The first I hug the little boy I in charge , it was not really good. Because he was keep crying all the time , and I don’t really know how to hug them , so I did go ask those teacher how can I hug him to make him feel better .for the next time I go and hug him again, I felt more use to it .
I went to the college and downtown survey thing, it was aite, but we got the same kind of answer every time, so it got kind of boring
but it was still fun to be out there asking other ppl question, and understand how much it sucks when someone ignores you intentionally on the street when you asked them a question.
